How does the Osia Implant work?

The Osia device is placed under the skin and bypasses damaged areas of the outer and middle ear, sending sound directly to the inner ear. The implant is attached to a titanium implant designed to promote faster and stronger integration with the bone. The Osia's System Piezo Power transducer is the part that vibrates, expands, and contracts to send powerful sound vibrations directly to your inner ear. This does not move the implant's inner workings, so you have reliable and consistent hearing performance over time. The Osia implant addresses a range of hearing loss levels and helps you hear now, as well as if your hearing loss worsens over time.

What are the benefits of the Osia Implant?

After one year, people who received an Osia implant showed significant hearing improvements, even in noisy environments that would generally cause hearing struggles. Additionally, Osia users significantly improve their ability to understand speech in quiet and noisy environments.

One of the most significant benefits of the Osia Implant is that it is approved for MRIs when the internal magnet is removed with a simple procedure. You can safely access the imaging you need without worrying about your implant causing any interruptions.

Most notably, the Osia System features direct, Made for iPhone technology so you can stream sound directly from a compatible Apple device without any attachments to the sound processor. Android and other smartphone users can stream sound directly to the Osia 2 Sound Processor using a separate device.

With the Osia Smart App, you can:

  • Adjust the volume, treble, and bass
  • Directly manage your hearing experience from your smartphone
  • Stream music, entertainment, GPS directions, or take a phone call from your processor
  • Access assistance for your Osia implant
  • Check battery status
  • View personal hearing information
  • Locate a lost sound processor

Am I a good candidate for an Osia Implant?

The Osia implant is best for patients with conductive hearing loss, mixed hearing loss, and single-sided deafness (SSD). Osia’s external processor is attached to the scalp when used and communicates to the internal device electromagnetically. No visible implant comes through the skin when the external processor is taken off.

The Osia implant may be your best choice for improving your hearing if you have chronic ear infections, making you unable to wear a standard hearing aid since it may worsen the infection. Because the Osia is implanted behind the ear and does not use the ear canal, it is an ideal device for people who experience chronic ear infections in addition to hearing loss.

When patients have congenital ear canal and middle ear malformations, or congenital aural atresia, the hearing function cannot be repaired by reconstructive surgery. And, a standard hearing aid may not be usable when the ear canal is unsuitable for such a design. In most cases, Osia can allow these patients to hear again.
