Several factors can cause a hole or tear in the eardrum. This includes head trauma, ear infections, loud noises or sounds near the ear, or foreign particles inside the ear. A rupture can cause ear pain, ringing in the ears, nausea, spinning sensation, and hearing loss when a rupture occurs. Our five office locations offer treatment to repair the perforation. This includes the placement of a patch over the hole, or if that method is not adequate, we also provide surgery.

How the Procedure Works

In some cases, eardrum perforation will heal on its own within a few weeks. If that doesn’t occur, medical intervention will be necessary to stop your symptoms.

The first step will be an evaluation with one of our experienced providers. They will examine your ear to look for signs of tearing and may run some tests to determine the cause of the perforation.

If the provider determines that treatment is necessary, they first try to use the patch method. A chemical treatment is first applied to the hole to promote healing, and then the patch is used to seal it. Patches may need to be re-applied during the healing process. If the patch method is unsuccessful, there is an outpatient surgical procedure that can be performed. The surgery uses a small graft of tissue to repair the hole.

Who is a Candidate?

Patients who have a hole or tear in their eardrums are candidates for treatment. Other candidates have tried other treatment methods unsuccessfully and are now looking for alternatives, including surgery.

It is essential to understand the signs of eardrum perforation, as you may not realize that is the cause of your symptoms. If you are experiencing ear pain, our staff can evaluate your ears, and no matter the outcome, recommend a course of treatment.

Your Eardrum Perforation Treatment

If the patch method is being used, a chemical substance will first be applied to the edges of the tear to help jumpstart healing. Next, a small patch will be applied to seal the hole. Once this is complete, patients can resume their regular activities while ensuring the ear remains clean and dry.

Patches may need to be reapplied until the hole has fully healed. For patients who need surgical intervention, the procedure uses a small tissue graft to patch the hole.
