What Causes Hearing Loss?

Hearing loss can be caused by a number of factors, which become more numerous as we age. Generally, hearing loss is caused by earwax, fluid, foreign objects, ear infections, injury, or a structural imperfection. The most common causes of hearing loss include the following:

  • Damage to or structural defects of the inner ear
  • A buildup of earwax
  • Ear infection
  • Abnormal bone growths or tumors
  • Ruptured eardrum

Hearing Loss Treatment

Your treatment is decided upon after a thorough evaluation of your symptoms and your medical background. Some of the most common techniques used to resolve your healing loss issues include:

Earwax Removal

A build-up of earwax can affect your hearing and also cause discomfort and tinnitus. We will use a small suctioning device to clear the channel of debris while carefully preserving your internal ear structures.

Surgery

Once non-invasive methods of solving your issue have been exhausted, we will consider surgery to address structural defects related to your loss of hearing.

Hearing Aids

Today’s hearing aids are not the bulky, conspicuous devices your grandparents had. These tiny instruments worn behind the ears help to maximize the volume of nearby sounds, helping you to connect more with the people around you. The devices can be adjusted to your desired settings so that you can tune in and out when needed.

Types of Hearing Loss

Conductive – When sound waves are not able to travel from the outer and middle ear to the inner ear, conductive hearing loss occurs. The cause of this condition may be earwax, foreign objects, fluid, infection, injury, or a structural imperfection. Conductive hearing loss can be addressed through surgery or medical treatments and is most common in young children.

Sensorineural – This is the most widely found type of hearing loss. It occurs as a result of the aging process, exposure to high decibels, injury, disease, genetics, or certain medications. While it is not medically treatable, it can be lessened with hearing aids.

Mixed – This is a combination of conductive and sensorineural hearing loss. With mixed hearing loss, it’s essential that a hearing test is performed to discover the exact cause of the problem and the best solution.

Hearing Loss FAQ

Does everyone experience hearing loss as they age?

While not every person will lose their hearing entirely, some degree of hearing loss is common in about 50% of the population over the age of 65 in the United States.

Can hearing loss be reversed?

It depends on the situation. It may be possible to remove blockages that prohibit proper hearing. In other cases, it may only be possible to amplify sound through the use of hearing aids.
