Thyroidectomy, more commonly known as thyroid surgery, is a procedure to partially or completely remove the thyroid, a gland located at the bottom of the neck. The thyroid gland helps regulate hormonal balance and oversees the body’s metabolism. When the gland becomes over or underactive or develops a mass, tumor, or growth, it is necessary to see a qualified ENT specialist who can diagnose and treat the ailment.

Procedure Overview

Thyroid surgery is performed under general anesthesia on an outpatient basis, meaning that you will be completely asleep during your treatment, and you will not feel any pain. Your surgeon will create a small incision at the base of the neck. Typically this is made within a crease so that scarring is inconspicuous. Once the incision has been made, the doctor will remove a portion of the thyroid or the entire gland.

Conditions treated

  • Thyroid cancer
  • Enlarged thyroid
  • Thyroid mass, tumor, goiter, or nodule
  • Hyperthyroidism that has not been well-managed with medication

“I don't normally do reviews, but I felt compelled to offer my experiences and opinion. I have now been to The Barranco Clinic in Clermont several times and always received prompt, courteous service. The staff was friendly and professional. The offices were clean, and everyone was well-organized. My doctor listened to my concerns and responded appropriately.  No one tried to pressure me into anything but only offered and explained options.  My time there was well spent, and I left feeling relieved that I had gone in, which this last time was for a blockage, which was quickly and painlessly removed.”

Benefits of the Procedure

Thyroid surgery can help combat hormonal imbalances and other issues caused by a mass or tumor. The surgery can be life-saving when cancer is present or when a growth is compressing the trachea or causing dysphagia.

The procedure can help restore normalcy and quality of life, as thyroid issues can significantly impact your relationships, work, and creative efforts. Thyroid surgery offers long-lasting relief from debilitating and uncomfortable symptoms.

After surgery, scarring is minimal, and patients can return to their regular activities within a few days.

Procedure Candidacy

Patients who are currently struggling with a thyroid condition or an enlarged mass, nodule, tumor, or goiter may qualify for surgery depending on their overall health and the severity of their symptoms.

We will perform in-depth diagnostic testing to determine the best options for your treatment. Good candidates for surgery are those who have not obtained the relief they seek from medication alone.

What to Expect from the Procedure

Our doctors will first need to perform an analysis of your concerns and conduct a physical exam and review of your medical history to figure out if surgery is the best approach in your unique case. Once surgery has been selected as the best method of addressing your symptoms, your surgery date will be scheduled.

Thyroid surgery is performed under general anesthesia on an outpatient basis. A tiny incision is created at the base of the neck through which the surgeon will excise part or all of the thyroid gland. In some cases, patients may need to be monitored overnight, after which recovery can continue in the privacy of your home.

FAQ

Is thyroid surgery painful?

You will be anesthetized during the surgery, so you will feel no pain. After surgery, patients typically need only Tylenol to manage their discomfort.

Are there any alternatives to thyroid surgery?

Patients usually only pursue thyroid surgery after they have exhausted non-invasive treatment options such as medication. We will review your unique concerns during a private consultation.
