When the parathyroid glands located in front of the neck become overactive, it can augment the level of calcium circulating in the blood. This can cause a host of problems for the patient, including a weakening of the muscles, kidney stones, increased urination, loss of concentration, and a risk of osteoporosis.

Procedure Overview

Parathyroid surgery is typically performed under general anesthesia, ensuring the patient’s complete comfort and relaxation during the procedure. A small incision is made at the base of the neck in order to access the parathyroid glands, of which there are four total. Incisions are small enough that they will be cosmetically inconspicuous after they heal. Your ENT surgeon will remove either all of the glands or only a portion according to your previously decided upon treatment plan. Fine sutures are then used to close the wounds.

“Very professional with great doctors and staff. Beautiful view while you wait. Although the wait is very short. As far as the waiting room goes, it is a big, comfortable area.”

Benefits of the Procedure

For certain patients, parathyroid surgery can offer dramatic relief from symptoms that are interfering with their comfort and quality of life. Once the parathyroid glands have been removed, the calcium levels in the blood will return to normal, reducing the risk of long-term consequences. Incisions for parathyroid surgery are well-concealed, so scarring is minimal.

Conditions Treated

Parathyroid surgery is performed to address hyperparathyroidism, a condition in which the parathyroid glands secrete too high a level of PTH hormones. This leads to elevated amounts of calcium in the blood, which causes kidney stones, bone degradation, and a loss of alertness, among other symptoms.

What to Expect from the Procedure

After our team has determined you to be a good candidate for parathyroid surgery, your surgery date will be scheduled. You will receive general anesthesia on the day of your procedure, after which the surgeon will create a 2-3 mm incision at the base of the neck where the parathyroid glands are located. The doctor will then remove part or all of the glands, addressing the root cause of your elevated calcium levels and side effects. Once the incisions are closed, you will be carefully monitored until you can return home to rest and recuperate.
