Unfortunately, when the turbinates get swollen, enlarged, or displaced, it can obstruct the breathing process. By reducing the turbinates, our skilled ENT providers at The Barranco Clinic can help relieve your symptoms and restore your overall well-being.

Procedure Overview

  • Turbinate reduction using cauterization, coblation, and radiofrequency: During this procedure, the turbinates are reduced without compromising the bone or tissue integrity. A specialized device warms the turbinates through waves of concentrated energy. This process forms scar tissue, which naturally shrinks the structures. Turbinate reduction performed in this manner uses only local anesthesia and can take less than half an hour to complete.
  • Turbinate reduction with surgery: Using general anesthesia, surgery can be performed to remove a portion of the underlying bone beneath the turbinates, which helps shrink them in size. The surrounding tissue can also be reduced, which helps further enlarge the air passageways.

What to Expect from the Procedure

As a first step, our providers will evaluate your nose and decide upon the best method of relieving your symptoms. Treatment ranges from less invasive options to surgical solutions.

On the less invasive side, a heating instrument can be used to warm the turbinates enough to create scar tissue, which reduces their size. Patients can return home immediately afterward. For surgical removal of the turbinates, general anesthesia is used. In this case, the underlying bone beneath the turbinates is excised. Patients will receive nasal packing that is in place for up to one week.

Who is a candidate?

If enlarged turbinates are the cause of your headaches, allergies, and chronic nasal infections, turbinate reduction might be the ideal procedure for mitigating your symptoms and obtaining the relief from discomfort that you seek. Our knowledgeable ENT specialists will evaluate your nose and review your medical history to ensure that the procedure is the best approach in your unique case.

How do I know which procedure is right for me?

Our ENT doctors have decades of expertise diagnosing and treating enlarged turbinates. They will conduct a thorough examination and evaluation of your symptoms and determine the best path toward relieving your specific issues.

Is the procedure painful?

All procedures, whether surgical or non-surgical, are performed with anesthesia (local or general) to ensure your comfort and relaxation during the process. Afterward, your recovery can be well-managed with prescription pain medications provided by the doctor or over-the-counter options such as Tylenol.
