Proper ear hygiene and wax removal are important steps in maintaining your overall health. Unfortunately, it is one area that is often overlooked or performed incorrectly, leading to unwanted side effects. When the ears have an abundance of wax blocking them, it can impact your ability to hear.
Hygiene and Wax Removal Treatment
Most people tend to clean their ears with a cotton swab. Unfortunately, this method can sometimes push wax or foreign particles deeper into the ears and lead to infections, hearing loss, or eardrum rupture. This is why it is essential to have a trained provider clean your ears and remove wax when blockages or pain occurs. The Barranco Clinic has several tools available to clean or remove blockages from ears.
The first step will be an examination of your ears to view the wax blockage and help determine the best cleaning method. One method used to clean the ears is with a curved tool called a curet. The tool is inserted into the ears and hooks the wax to allow it to be easily removed. Another option is to use a suction device, WaterPik®, or a syringe filled with water.
