While earwax is a sign of a healthy ear, too much of it can lead to problems in the ears. Excessive earwax can impair your hearing, cause pain, fullness, or even a “plugged up” feeling in the ears. The Barranco Clinic offers professional ear hygiene and wax removal services to help ensure your ears are properly cleaned.

Hygiene and Wax Removal Treatment

Most people tend to clean their ears with a cotton swab. Unfortunately, this method can sometimes push wax or foreign particles deeper into the ears and lead to infections, hearing loss, or eardrum rupture. This is why it is essential to have a trained provider clean your ears and remove wax when blockages or pain occurs. The Barranco Clinic has several tools available to clean or remove blockages from ears.

The first step will be an examination of your ears to view the wax blockage and help determine the best cleaning method. One method used to clean the ears is with a curved tool called a curet. The tool is inserted into the ears and hooks the wax to allow it to be easily removed. Another option is to use a suction device, WaterPik®, or a syringe filled with water.

When is Earwax Removal or Ear Cleaning Needed?

This treatment can be beneficial for many patients. It can be used for patients who overproduce earwax and need help removing the excess build-up. Patients who do not clean their ears properly or are not cleaning them often enough can also benefit. When the wax is not cleaned correctly, it can build up or have the wax pushed deeper into the ear.

Who is a Candidate for Ear Hygiene and Wax Removal?

Those experiencing pain, pressure, ringing, loss of hearing, or fullness in their ears may be a candidate for the treatment. If you have begun to feel any of these symptoms, it is important that you do not attempt to clean or remove the wax yourself, as this can lead to further pain or damage to the ear. Our staff can easily remove these blockages in our offices.

Your provider will first examine the ears and the blockages to determine the best form of treatment. The exam may include using an instrument that allows the providers to see further inside the ear.

Once the method of removal has been selected, the process takes just a short amount of time. After it is complete, most patients feel instant relief from pressure and fullness, and in some cases, hearing loss can improve.

Ear Hygiene and Wax Removal FAQ

Is earwax bad for my ears?

No. Earwax is naturally created by our bodies to help protect our ears. Wax helps keep water and bacteria out of the ears and helps lubricate and clean the ear canal.

Will I need more than one treatment?

Some patients just require one treatment, while others may require a follow-up visit or additional aftercare.
